New Federal Student Loan Forgiveness Program

Last Updated: September 29, 2022

A program to forgive federal student loans was announced August 24, 2022, and we understand that you have questions about how this affects your Aspire Servicing Center account. We appreciate your business and are working hard to continue to provide excellent customer service while we pursue additional details.

All of the information needed by borrowers is not yet available. We will continue to update this site as more details on qualifications and any actions necessary by borrowers to obtain this assistance becomes available.

Below are some of the most common questions concerning Aspire Servicing Center accounts. In the meantime, you may also visit Federal Student Aid for additional details.

What type of loans does Aspire Servicing Center service?

We service Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP) loans and private education loans.

If you received a federal loan after June 30, 2010, it is a federal Direct Loan, which we do not service. If you have FFELP loans distributed prior to June 30, 2010, in your Aspire Servicing Center account, they are privately held federal student loans, which the U.S. Department of Education announced on September 29, 2022, are not currently eligible for the one-time debt relief.

Any private loan you have serviced by Aspire Servicing Center will not be eligible for any federal forgiveness programs and you need to continue making your payments.

Do I qualify for student loan forgiveness?

While federal officials have stated FFELP loans do not qualify for the one-time relief, they have also stated they are considering options to assist FFELP borrowers. We will continue to monitor their actions and provide up-to-date information on this site when available.

There are, however, no plans to extend federal forgiveness to private student loans.

As of September 29, 2022, we know:

  • FFELP loans are generally not eligible. The relief is being applied to federally held loans, like the federal Direct Loans disbursed after June 30, 2010.
  • As of September 29, 2022, borrowers with FFELP loans cannot obtain one-time debt relief by consolidating into new Direct Loans.
  • If you applied to consolidate your FFELP loans into a federal Direct Loan prior to September 29, 2022, that consolidation loan is eligible based on the U.S. Department of Education website update posted on September 29.
  • The U.S. Department of Education is assessing whether there are alternate pathways to provide relief to borrowers with federal student loans, including FFELP and Perkins loans.

How do I apply for forgiveness for my federal student loans?

Should the U.S. Department of Education decide at some point to allow FFELP loan borrowers to qualify for relief, we will update information on this site and through your online account access about how to do so.

How do I receive updates about the loan forgiveness program?

To help ensure you receive important communications about this program:

  • Create a login to your Aspire Servicing Center online account if you do not already have one.
  • Check that the contact information listed in your Aspire Servicing Center online account is current. Your contact information is accessed by selecting your name in the upper right corner of your online account.
  • Continue to check this website. We will continue to update this page as additional details become available.
  • Subscribe for federal student loan updates from the U.S Department of Education.

What about payments that are due before details are finalized?

Please continue to make payments as normal. If you cannot afford your monthly payment, options may be available for you.

How can I tell whether my loans serviced by Aspire Servicing Center are federal or private?

If you are unsure whether we service private or federal student loans for you, you can determine your loan type by:

  • Logging in to your online account. You should see the information in the Alerts & Messages section after logging in.
  • Calling (800) 603-7658 toll free, seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Enter your 10-digit account number or Social Security number to hear what type of student loans you have with Aspire Servicing Center.
